May probably offers the best weather of the entire year in Almería for those who enjoy moving by bicycle: mild temperatures that rarely exceed 25 degrees, clear skies almost daily and still without the extreme heat that will arrive in the central summer months. It is, therefore, the ideal time to discover the extensive network of bike paths that connects El Toyo with the rest of the Almeria coast.

A network of cycle paths starts from the urbanization itself and runs alongside gardens and green areas until reaching the coastline, allowing you to reach the beach in a matter of minutes without having to take the car. From there, the bike path continues along the coast in the direction of Retamar and, in the opposite direction, towards Almería capital, on a journey of just over an hour by bicycle at a leisurely pace that offers constant views of the Mediterranean.

For those looking for a longer and more demanding route, it is possible to connect with the paths that enter the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, although it is worth keeping in mind that a good part of these sections are dirt and require a mountain or gravel bike, in addition to being prepared with plenty of water, since the May sun, although milder than the summer sun, is still intense in the central hours of the day.

Plaza del Mar, in the heart of El Toyo, functions as a regular meeting point for local cyclists, with cafes and terraces where they can recharge their batteries before continuing the route or returning home. Many residents also take advantage of the early morning hours on weekends to go out in groups, taking advantage of the fact that traffic is practically non-existent and the temperatures are the most pleasant of the day.

If you are traveling without your own bicycle, there are several rental points in the area, both conventional and electric bicycles, the latter especially recommended for those who want to get to Almería capital without spending too much energy on the way there.

In short, May is the perfect month to explore the Almeria coast on two wheels, combining exercise, landscape and the possibility of visiting corners that are much more difficult to discover by car.

For those who dare to do the complete route to Almería capital, it is worth reserving time to visit the Cable Inglés, an old mineral wharf from the 20th century converted into a promenade, one of the most photographed points of the city and a mandatory stop before embarking on the return bicycle to El Toyo.

May is also the month in which several popular cycling events are held in the province, which cross part of the coast and inland of Almería, a good opportunity for those who want to combine their holidays with some amateur competition or simply to enjoy the cycling atmosphere that is generated on those days in the area.

Finally, it is worth remembering that the weather in May, although generally stable, can bring some days of east wind, especially in the afternoon, so it is recommended to check the forecast before embarking on long routes and, in case of strong wind, take advantage of the morning hours, which are much calmer on most days of the month.
