While much of Spain shiveres under the rain and low temperatures of December, Almería maintains one of its best assets: it has more than 320 days of sunshine a year, the highest average in the entire Iberian Peninsula. This makes the province, and specifically the El Toyo area, an ideal destination for those looking for a winter getaway with a mild climate without having to cross half the world.
Daytime temperatures in December are usually around 16 to 18 degrees, which allows you to walk along the promenade, walk the trails of Cabo de Gata or enjoy a meal on a terrace without the need for heavy coats. Although the water no longer invites prolonged swimming, many visitors take advantage of these dates for coastal walks, landscape photography and bird watching, since the salt flats of Cabo de Gata welcome numerous migratory species at this time, including pink flamingos that offer spectacular pictures in the low light of winter.
December is also the season for Christmas markets and family activities in Almería capital, with its illuminated Alcazaba and a much calmer atmosphere than that of other large Spanish cities at this time. For those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, El Toyo offers the possibility of teleworking for a few days with good weather and high-speed Wi-Fi, combining work days with afternoons walking on the beach.
Another advantage of traveling in winter is availability and price: flights and accommodation are usually considerably cheaper than in high season, and it is much easier to find a table in the best restaurants in the area without prior reservation.
If we add to this that Almería airport is just ten minutes from El Toyo, with direct connections to several European cities, we have all the ingredients for a different winter getaway: sun, tranquility, good food and nature, all away from the tourist crowds of summer. For those who already know Almería in high season, December can be the perfect opportunity to discover a different and much calmer side of this land.
Another of the great attractions of Almería in December is the possibility of combining a getaway from the sun with a visit to small-format Christmas markets, much more intimate than those in the large capitals, where it is common to find local crafts, traditional sweets and decorations handmade by local producers.
For those looking for some physical activity without giving up good weather, December is also an excellent month for golf, since the province has quality courses a short distance from El Toyo that allow you to play practically every day of the month thanks to the absence of prolonged rain and mild temperatures during the central hours of the day.
Finally, December is a quiet month to calmly discover the towns in the interior of Cabo de Gata, such as Níjar, famous for its pottery and its traditional jarapa, a characteristic artisanal fabric of the area. Walking through its cobbled streets, buying a piece of local ceramics and eating in one of its home-cooked restaurants is a perfect plan for a winter afternoon in the province.
